How To Turn On/Off Cortana in Windows 10 PC – Guide

Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant, built into Windows 10, has been removed from the search environment in the latest versions of the operating system. The company’s attempt to develop this feature was unsuccessful. If you don’t use Cortana and would like it gone, there are ways to disable it and replace it with Windows Search. This adds Cortana to a list of Microsoft products that have failed to meet expectations. To remove it from your device, you can use a registry hack in Windows 10 Home or a local group policy in Windows 10 Pro.

How to turn on/off Cortana in Windows 10

Press the Start button and select the Settings icon, a small gear-shaped symbol.

To access Cortana’s settings, simply search for it in the Settings search box and click the “Change how you talk to Cortana” option.

To turn off Cortana’s voice activation, navigate to the Hey Cortana section and switch the toggle to Off.

Disable the option to allow Cortana to hear commands when pressing the Windows logo key + C in the Keyboard Shortcut section. This will effectively disable Cortana and prevent it from listening for your commands. To take it a step further, you can also remove Cortana’s permissions.

To access Cortana’s settings, type “Cortana” into the search box and select “Cortana Permissions” or “Manage what Cortana can do, see and use” from the results.

Users can control the data Cortana accesses from their device by navigating to the Permissions section and selecting “Manage the information Cortana can access from this device.”

Turn off all options on this permissions page.
