How to transfer your license of Windows from one PC to another – Guide

If you’re building a custom PC, you may need to buy a Windows 10 license. Otherwise, it usually comes pre-installed and activated on new laptops and PCs.

If you’re upgrading to a new PC, you don’t need to purchase a new Windows 10 license. Instead, you can transfer your existing license from your old computer to the new one. Here’s how.

How to transfer Windows license from one PC to another PC

Check Windows 10 License Type

Check your Windows 10 license type quickly and easily by using the Command Prompt.

To open Command Prompt with administrator privileges, search for it in the Start menu, right-click on the best match, and select “Run as administrator.”

Entering a command will bring up a dialog box with the necessary information.

If you have a retail license, you can transfer your Windows 10 to another PC. But if your license is volume or OEM, you’ll need to buy a new one.

Transfer Windows 10 License via Product Key

Users can deactivate Windows 10 on their original PC and transfer the license to a new device, allowing them to use the same version of Windows 10 on both machines.

To find your Windows 10 product key, right-click on This PC and select Properties. The product key will be displayed in the Windows activation section.

To access Command Prompt with administrator privileges, search for it in the Start menu and select ‘Run as administrator’ from the right-click menu.
