How To Set Up Outlook.com on Mac OS X Using IMAP – Guide
Microsoft’s email service underwent a modern redesign more than a year ago, but users have been left without support for the IMAP protocol, causing compatibility issues with various email applications, including OS X Mail.
Nowadays, almost all reputable email services use IMAP, which has advantages over POP email. We previously discussed the differences between the two protocols and concluded that IMAP is preferable.
Outlook.com now supports IMAP, meaning users no longer need to rely on Exchange ActiveSync to sync their emails.
To set up Outlook.com on Mac Mail, users can use IMAP.
Open the Mail app on your Mac and go to its Preferences. Select the Accounts tab in the Preferences panel.
Creating a new Outlook.com account is easy: click the “+” sign at the bottom left of the panel, enter your full name and email address, then click “Continue.” Don’t enter your password - Mail will attempt to connect to your account using POP3 protocol, which should be avoided.
If no password is entered, Mail will show an error message.
Clicking “Continue” will open a new panel prompting you to enter account information. Fill out the form with the required details.
Outlook’s incoming mail server is imap-mail.outlook.com.
Outlook email addresses can be used as user names.
Click Continue and wait for the new account information panel to appear.
Users must provide Outgoing Mail Server information when setting up their accounts. This includes the server address, port number, and authentication details.
Outlook’s outgoing mail server is smtp-mail.outlook.com.
Businesses should use authentication to verify the identity of customers and protect their data.

Once you have completed the necessary steps, click ‘Continue’ and review your information on the next page. When satisfied, click ‘Create’ to activate your new Mail account.
Don’t create a new Outlook.com account if you already have one set up in Mail using Exchange ActiveSync - just select it in Mail Preferences and edit your information with the given settings.
