Plex users can now control their media with Alexa voice commands, thanks to the new Plex Integration for Echo. This integration allows them to create a central hub for all their media and access it from anywhere on the Internet.
Context Up a Plex server
Sign up for Plex with your email and download the Plex Media Server to get started.
Choose the version that works with your computer’s operating system and click “Download” to get started.
After installation, launch the server and name it in the web app setup screen to proceed.
Users can customize their Plex experience by selecting which libraries to add or remove. To do so, click “Next” after making the desired changes.
You can now download Plex apps to your mobile devices, or simply click “Done” to finish.
Plex, a media server, will automatically import your libraries’ content to its own platform.
Integrating your Plex server with Alexa is easy. Just follow these steps: 1) Download the Alexa app; 2) Log in to your Plex account; 3) Enable the Plex skill in the Alexa app; 4) Link your Echo device to your Plex account. Once complete, you can use voice commands to control playback on your Plex server.
Type “Plex” into the Abilities search bar and hit enter.
To activate the Plex Skill, click “Enable.”
Users must log into the Plex website and authorize their account by clicking the “Authorize” button.
Change the default player
If you have multiple devices connected to your Plex server, you can set one of them as the default player. Otherwise, your web browser will be the default Plex player.
Say “Alexa, ask Plex to change your default player” and you can choose which device will be the go-to for streaming.

To easily connect your Echo to a Plex server, follow these steps: Set up multiple servers on Plex, then select one to work with your Echo.
Alexa now allows users to easily switch their default Plex server, simply by asking. After requesting the change, Alexa will present a list of available servers for selection and set the chosen one as the new default.
Basic Plex Commands for Alexa
With the Plex skill for Alexa, controlling your media server is a breeze. From basic commands like “Alexa, play [title]” to more advanced ones like “Alexa, show me movies with [actor],” you can easily access your content with voice commands. You can now ask Alexa to play music through Plex, simply by saying “Alexa, tell Plex to play some music.”
You can now control your Plex media playback with Alexa. Just say “Alexa, tell Plex to play/pause/stop” and you’re good to go.
Need a movie or TV show suggestion? Ask Alexa to “get Plex to suggest something to watch.”
Ask Alexa to play “The Big Lebowski” with Plex.
Can’t remember what you were watching? Just ask Alexa to remind you with Plex. Simply say, “Alexa, ask Plex what I was in the middle of” and she’ll tell you the title of your last show or movie.
