How to Replace Paint 3D with Paint Classic in the Windows 10 Creators update – Guide
As an Insider, you get early access to new Windows software, but that comes with a trade-off. Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 update for Insiders replaces the classic Paint app with 3D Paint, which has more features but is slower and has a less user-friendly interface. Some Insiders may prefer the old version of Paint for its speed and simplicity.
Microsoft has left a way for users to access the classic Paint app: simply delete the Paint 3D viewer. Despite being hidden, the classic version of Paint is still available on Windows – and once you uninstall the 3D app, you can open it as usual.
Bring back the old Paint application in Windows 10
Microsoft has hidden the classic Paint application, requiring users to modify registry keys to get it back. To ensure safety, users should back up their registry before attempting the steps.
To access the Windows Registry Editor, users must open the Run dialog box, type “regedit,” right-click and select “Run as administrator.”
To access the Windows Paint registry key, copy and paste “HKLM Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Applets Paint Settings” into the Registry’s address bar, then create a new DWORD (32-bit) value.
To disable Modern Paint Bootstrap, right-click the DWORD value and select Properties. Change the value to 0 if it isn’t already, then click OK.
To create a registry key for Settings, right-click Paint > New > Key and type the word Settings.
For those missing the classic version of Microsoft Paint, there’s a simple solution: exit the registry, launch Paint as usual and you’ll be back to using the beloved classic version.
