How to Rename Email Flags in Mac’s Apple Mail – Guide

Mac Mail users can customize their email flags by renaming the default colors. All versions of OS X from Lion to Mavericks now support flag renaming in Mail.

To be able to rename flags in the sidebar, users must first tag emails with every available color combination. Only then will they be able to extend the “Flag” menu.

Renaming email flags in the Mac Mail app

The Mail app can be opened as usual.

Flag an email message with a color of your choice.

Create a system of organization by flagging emails with different colors. Assign each of the seven flag names to a unique email, ensuring that no two emails share the same color.

Head to the Mail app’s sidebar and click “Show” in the upper left corner if it’s not visible, then select “Flags” from the list.

To access a list of all used flags, click the small side arrow to expand the “Flagged” sidebar menu item. It’s essential to use all seven flags, as only those that have been used will appear in this list.

You can rename a flag by clicking on its name. There are two options available.

To rename a flag, simply hover over its name and type in a new one - just like on Mac.

Right-clicking on the banner name and selecting “Rename Mailbox” allows users to change its title.
