How to Record Mac’s Audio Output Using Audio Hijack – Guide
Record audio from almost any source on your Mac with Rogue Amoeba’s Audio Hijack software. Create custom signal processing chains and add native or third-party effects to the streams you create. It’s easy and accessible for all users.
Audio Hijack is a powerful audio routing and recording utility, offering users a range of options for capturing sound from apps. It’s an essential tool for anyone looking to record audio with ease. This article is not sponsored; I genuinely believe Audio Hijack is the best of its kind.
Record the sound of your web browser or any application
Open Audio Hijack and click New Session in the bottom left corner to choose between Web Audio or Application Audio templates, both of which are suitable for various purposes.
Audio Hijack’s free trial mode records up to 10 minutes of audio, after which the quality decreases. To record longer clips, users must purchase the full version for $49.
You can now customize your recording before you start. Click “Application” to select the program you want to record from, then browse your computer for it. You can also choose to open a URL specific to that application at the beginning of the recording, though this isn’t usually necessary.
For casual recording, the standard 256 kbps MP3 should suffice. Advanced users can customize their settings by changing the bit rate, file type and more.
Choose your output device and volume – your computer’s speakers will do – and save the recording.
Press the red record button when ready, then save and export your recording when finished.
Record the sound of all system outputs
Audio Hijack records all system audio from your Mac, similar to the model described above, but without the ability to select a specific application.
Record all sounds from multiple applications with Audio Hijack by adjusting the recording and output device settings, then pressing Record while the sound is playing.
Optional effects
Customize your audio experience with collapsible menus and drag-and-drop effects. Simply drag the effect to the left of the Output Device for it to take effect.
You can customize the Volume effect and use AUPitch to change the tone of your recording, but these effects are optional. Get creative if you’d like!
Save and export recording
Audio Hijack allows users to record audio from any output source and save it to the app. Simply click Recordings at the bottom of the app after recording to access the file.
Clicking Actions on a recording in Audio Hijack allows users to quickly export the file, edit it, view it in the Finder or add it to iTunes. Listeners should also remember to check the audio quality and add metadata before exporting.
