Import passwords from Chrome to Safari on Mac
Upgrade your Mac to the latest version of macOS Catalina (10.15.4 or higher) to gain access to the option of importing passwords from Chrome into Safari. To update, go to the Apple menu> System Preferences> Software Update and install any available updates.
To ensure your passwords are up to date, open Chrome for a few seconds to sync login details from your Google Account before importing them into Safari.
For a successful import of passwords from Chrome to Safari, users must ensure they exit Chrome completely before attempting the transfer. To do so, select ‘Exit Google Chrome’ from the Chrome menu.
Open Safari and import your Google Chrome data with a few clicks: File > Import from > Google Chrome.
To import data from Chrome into Safari, check the box next to Passwords and, if desired, Favorites and History. Click Import to complete the process.
Enter your Mac user account password in the pop-up window to access the ’login’ keychain. Click Allow to proceed.
Enter the password for the ’login’ keychain in the ‘Safari want to access key…’ box and click Allow to proceed.
Safari will automatically import passwords from Chrome, without any visual cues to confirm the transfer.
To ensure your passwords have been successfully imported from Chrome to Safari, go to Safari> Preferences> Passwords and enter your user account password. You’ll then be able to view a list of passwords, including those you’ve imported from Chrome which will have been merged with any existing Safari passwords.
If you’ve saved login details for a website in Chrome, try signing in with Safari and it may automatically fill in the information.
Sync your Safari passwords to iPhone / iPad
Users can now easily transfer their passwords from Chrome to Safari, allowing them to sync across all their Apple devices with iCloud Keychain.
If you want to view your passwords for websites and apps, head to the Passwords section in your iPhone or iPad’s Settings. With password autocomplete enabled, Safari will automatically fill them in for you.
