Guide: Disable OneNote Spell Check: Guide

OneNote is an impressive tool for taking, organizing and categorizing notes. Its ability to quickly capture and store information across multiple notebooks makes it a great choice for anyone looking to stay organized.

Those who are meticulous about grammar may not find OneNote’s lack of error-checking ideal. However, taking quick notes can be done quickly and without fear of typos.

Those helpful red squiggly lines can quickly become a nuisance when all you want to do is take notes.

If you’re tired of dealing with spelling errors, consider turning off your spell checker or using a OneNote add-in to disable it for certain parts of your text.

Turn off spell check

To disable spell check in OneNote and the Windows Store app, simply follow two different procedures.

No more red squiggles! After following the steps for your version of the application, you won’t see any annoying red squiggles on existing or new notes.

A note

OneNote users can access the File tab by launching the program.

Click ‘Options’ from the menu that appears.

To complete Step 3, click the Proofing tab located on the side.

Uncheck the “Check spell as you type” box in OneNote to stop it from automatically correcting spelling.

Confirm your changes by clicking OK.

Checking the box next to “Hide spelling and grammar errors” will hide both spelling and grammar mistakes.

OneNote app

Click the Ellipsis icon in the top right corner of the OneNote window to access Settings.

Access the Options menu in Settings for further customization.

Enable the “Hide Spelling Errors” setting in the Options pane.

To save your changes, click outside the options window.

Unfortunately, there is no way to hide spelling errors without also hiding grammar errors - the “Hide spelling errors” option hides both.

Turn off spell check selectively

OneNote users can disable spell checking on certain parts of their notes with the Onetastic add-in and No Spell Check macro, either before or after taking them.

You can keep OneNote’s spell-checker on without it disrupting your focus while taking notes.

Before proceeding, make sure to save your work and exit OneNote.

Get the Onetastic plug-in up and running with a simple download and installation.

Ensure you choose the correct version of the add-in for your OneNote - 32-bit or 64-bit.

To find out which version of OneNote you’re using, open the File menu, click Account and select About OneNote. Remember to close the application afterwards.

Run the executable file to install the add-in, following the on-screen instructions.

Press Start OneNote to continue.

Download the No Spell Check macro to disable spell-checking in Microsoft Word.

Downloading spell check software is not recommended. It can be unreliable and may contain malicious code that could harm your computer.

Download the executable file and launch it.

Click ‘Install’ to open the No Spell Check macro in the Download Macros window.

Exit the Download Macros window as soon as you see the blue-colored message “Installed no spell check.”

Simply highlight the text and click the Home tab to remove spell check.

To avoid spell check while writing a note, simply place your cursor and open the Home tab.

To disable spell check, click the “Spell Check” button in the Macros group, then select “No Spell Check.”

If you enable the macro before creating a new note, you won’t find any typos while typing and all red squiggles should be removed immediately.

When creating a new note, the spell checker’s macro is disabled by default. To ensure errors are not detected, users must enable the macro.

No more distractions

Disabling spell check can help you take notes more quickly and effectively, allowing your thoughts to flow without interruption.

Users of Microsoft Word can take advantage of the Onetastic add-in to keep spell check active while avoiding potential distractions.
