Getting started with the settlement system is simple - all you need to do is start the game.

With the Frontiers update, No Man’s Sky players can now find alien settlements and become their Supervisor. Here’s how to locate these villages, own multiple settlements, and even find them on non-extreme planets.
Nobody’s Heaven: How to Find settlements and become a supervisor
Exploring the universe of No Man’s Sky just got easier: all you need to do is take off in your ship and fly into space. You’ll soon receive a Distress Signal, which will mark a beacon on a nearby planet – your first settlement.
Once you reach the Agreement, you’ll have to battle Sentinels before being appointed Supervisor at a terminal in the center of the area. To do so, speak to one of the villagers.
Take the reins of the Accord and become its leader. Embark on a journey to expand the village by completing a series of objectives.
Can you have multiple settlements?
You can only supervise one Agreement at a time. Taking on a new one will end your current Agreement, requiring you to start anew.
Change of settlements
If you’re looking to move to a new settlement, head to a space station and talk to the cartographer. You can buy planetary settlement maps for 5 navigation dice each. Once you’ve found a planet you like, open the map and it will mark your Colony on the planet, making you its Supervisor. However, after your first settlement, taking control of additional ones will require resources from the dominant race in that system - such as 3 Vy’Keen Daggers.
With the Tau update, Exocrafts like the Roamer can be used to scan for settlements with advanced scanners.
