Guide: How To Enable/Disable ActiveX on Chrome Browser
Programmers have developed a concept that allows them to use the same code for applications such as Microsoft Word and Outlook Express, eliminating the need to create separate spell check functions for each.
Creating a spell check object makes it easy to implement spell checking in apps, saving time and effort for developers. This same object can be used in other applications that require spell checking.
How to Enable ActiveX on Google Chrome
Despite its potential benefits, ActiveX is not enabled in all browsers due to its Microsoft-only nature. The technology, developed by Microsoft, only works on applications made by the same company – such as Internet Explorer, PowerPoint, Excel and Word.
You can now enable ActiveX on both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, a feature that was not available before. Here’s how to do it.
Enable ActiveX in Chrome
Explore both options and select the one that is most straightforward for you.
Method 1
Step 1
Access the web with Google Chrome: open the browser to explore the internet.
Step 2
Click the menu icon in Google Chrome (three horizontal or vertical lines/dots).
Step 3
Step 4
Go to the bottom of the page and click Advanced for more options.
Step 5
Go to the System page.
Step 6
Open Proxy Settings to reveal a new popup window.
Step 7
Navigate to the Security tab and select Custom level from the Security level for this zone section.
You can adjust your security settings to ensure ActiveX controls and plugins are enabled. Select the “Prompt” option for both “Download Signed ActiveX Controls” and “Download Unsigned ActiveX Controls Sections,” then check the box next to “Enable” in the “Run ActiveX Controls and Plugins” section.
Press ‘OK’ and restart your browser to apply the changes.
Method 2
A Chrome extension that enables ActiveX can be added by following a two-step process. First, download and install the plugin from an external source.
Once you’ve finished the final step, simply restart your browser and you’re ready to use the new feature.
Enable ActiveX on Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox follows a similar process.
Step 1
Mozilla users can now access the ActiveX plug-in, available for download.
Step 2
Download the plugin, then click the icon to install it and follow the instructions.
Step 3
Mozilla users should check Tools to confirm the plugin installation was successful.
Step 4
Step 5
Navigate to the Plugins tab to make changes.
Step 6
ActiveX can now be viewed as a plug-in.
Is adding Active X a security risk?
Using Active X controls can be risky, so it’s best to opt for signed options which tend to have a better track record.
Why can’t I use Active X in my browser?
You may be unable to access certain content due to your security settings. To ensure you can view all available content, adjust your security settings in the Tools and Security options.
