Guide: How to Edit Highlight Color in Adobe Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC can be a productivity-killer, with its Tools panel and tabbed display. Now, let’s tackle another issue: the marking tool.

Adobe may have made it difficult to find, but there are ways to change the default highlighter color in Acrobat Reader DC. It just requires a bit of digging.

Highlight the Properties dialog box

You can change the color of your highlights after they’ve been applied by right-clicking on the text and selecting Properties in the Highlight Properties dialog.

Hold down the Ctrl key and left click to select multiple items if you want to change the color of more than one set of highlighted words.

The Appearance tab offers a color picker to switch up the hue, plus a slider to adjust the opacity.

Check the box next to “Set properties” to set a default color.

Clicking OK will instantly change the highlighted text to the new color, and if you ticked the Make Properties Default box, that same color will be used for future highlights.

Highlighter toolbar

Using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + E is a faster and more efficient way to change color in real time than the above method.

If the toolbar is not visible, click the highlighter icon and use the shortcut to make it appear.

No matter where you move it on the screen, this toolbar is designed to stay put. It features a palette for quickly selecting colors and a drop-down menu to adjust opacity, making customizing colors simple.

The toolbar’s highlighter toolset makes it easy to mark PDF documents with lots of text.

The opacity menu offers five presets that provide a faster alternative to the Highlight Properties dialog box, sacrificing some precision in the process.

Highlighting text just got easier with the new application update: you can now quickly and easily switch between colors for your highlights, no matter how many times you open and close the toolbar.

Adobe’s toolbar is so impressive that even after some trial and error, users may find themselves forgiving the company.

Comment mode Color picker

Switching to comment mode is another way to directly change highlight colors, but it comes with a trade-off: the extra toolbar and side pane that appear will take up screen real estate. Fortunately, these can be hidden.

To enable comment mode, simply click View in the menu bar, select Tools, then Comment and Open.

Simply select a color from the new toolbar’s color picker and use the highlight tool to change colors - your selection will become the default until you switch.

The highlight tool can be kept selected by clicking the pin-shaped icon, and users can adjust the colors further with the Opacity slider.

To exit response mode, click the Close button on the right side of the toolbar.

Highlight Color on the iOS version

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on Android makes it easy to change highlight colors, but iOS users have to take a few extra steps. However, with the right know-how, they can still customize their highlights.

Tap a highlighted word or sequence of words, then select ‘Color’ from the menu that appears to open the color picker.

Selecting a color will replace the current one and become the default for future highlights.

Tap the Opacity option to adjust the color’s transparency, and it will stay at your chosen level for future use.

Changing colors on a regular basis is not possible with this method, unfortunately.

Paint them well

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is a great tool for reading and annotating PDFs, but its user interface design could use some work. Navigating the app can be tedious and time-consuming. Hopefully, Adobe will take note of these issues and make improvements in future versions.
