How to Customize Finder Toolbars in Mac – Guide

The Finder menu bar is a great feature of Macs, providing users with real-time information in an easy-to-use, compact format. However, as more apps are added, the menu bar can become cluttered and difficult to navigate. Fortunately, users can customize the menu bar by rearranging and removing icons to suit their needs. The Finder is the first thing that appears when a Mac is turned on and remains open while other apps are used. It consists of the menu bar at the top of the screen and a workspace below it where file, folder and application windows appear.

Customize the toolbar

To access a Finder window on Mac, click the Finder icon in the Dock.

Hide or show the toolbar

To reduce clutter, you can hide the toolbar, sidebar and status bar in Menu Bar. Simply select View > Hide Toolbar to do so.

Resize the toolbar

If the toolbar is too small to display all its items, you’ll see a More Toolbar Items button at the far right. To view the rest of the items, simply enlarge the window or click on the button.

Change what’s on the toolbar

Customize your toolbar by dragging items in and out, adding spaces between them, and deciding whether to show text with icons. Just go to View > Customize Toolbar from the menu bar.

Rearrange items on the toolbar

To move an item, press and hold the Command key while dragging it to a new spot.

Add a file or application

Press and hold the Command key, then drag the item to the Finder toolbar until a green plus sign appears.

Remove an item

To move an item off the toolbar, press and hold the Command key while dragging it.
