Guide: How to Create Multiple Profiles in Microsoft Edge Browser

The new Microsoft Edge browser makes it easy to create multiple user profiles, allowing you to share them with others or keep work and play separate. Installing the new version of Edge is the first step in setting up your own profile with custom settings and bookmarks.

Create a new profile

Microsoft Edge Chromium users no longer have to be stuck with the same profile for all their browsing activity. When first using the browser, it should have automatically created a new profile, and users may have signed up with a Microsoft account to sync their data. However, they can now switch profiles as needed.

Creating a new profile is simple if you want to browse the web without syncing your data with your Microsoft account, or access certain sites or sync specific forms of data using another Microsoft account.

To access your profile, click the icon in the top right corner of an Edge window.

Click “Add Profile” on the profile flyout that appears.

Press the “Add” button to complete the process.

Confirm your profile by clicking the “Confirm” button.

Create a new profile and start using it right away - your bookmarks and passwords will be stored locally, separate from other profiles.

Signing in with a Microsoft account is the key to backing up data online, syncing passwords and favorites across devices.

Log in to profile

You can protect your passwords and bookmarks by signing in to your profile with a different Microsoft account. This also allows you to access your data on other devices, as long as you use the same Microsoft account for sign-in.

To log in, click the profile icon and select ‘Sign In’.

Choose between a work or personal account to sign in.

Log in to your account and click Sync to synchronize your browsing data.

Customize your Microsoft account to sync the data forms of your choice.

Switch between profiles

Users can easily create and switch between multiple Microsoft Edge profiles by clicking the profile icon and selecting the desired profile.

Users can quickly switch between multiple profiles by opening each one in a separate window and using the taskbar (PC) or Mission Control (Mac) to navigate between them.

Change profile name and picture

Microsoft Edge allows users to customize their profiles by renaming them and adding or changing profile pictures.

To access profile settings, click the profile icon and select ‘Manage profile settings’.

To edit a profile, click the More icon (three dots) next to it, then select Edit.

Change your profile label and picture to customize your account.

Clicking ‘Change picture’ will allow you to upload a new image to the Microsoft Account web portal, or select one of the dozens of profile pictures built into the browser if you are not logged in.

Once finished, click Update to save changes.

Set default profile

Microsoft Edge now allows you to choose a default profile for when clicking external links, such as from an email client. This ensures that the profile you want is opened each time, rather than relying on the last one used.

Click the Profiles drop-down list and select Manage Profile Settings to access Multiple Profile Preferences.

Select the profile you want to set as the default from the menu next to ‘Default profile for external links’.

The new feature ensures that any alterations made to a document are automatically preserved, eliminating the need for manual saving.

Automatic profile change

Microsoft Edge can automatically switch between personal and work profiles based on the type of content you open. To stop this from happening, or to enable it if you don’t receive prompts, you must adjust the relevant setting.

Click the Profiles drop-down list and select Manage Profile Settings to access Multiple Profile Preferences.

To enable Automatic Profile Switch, toggle the switch next to it.

Log out of profile

Microsoft Edge makes signing out of a profile simple. Your data will no longer be linked to your Microsoft account, but any data already synced will remain online. You can also opt to clear locally stored browsing data when you log out, though this will delete your profile.

To sign out of a profile on Microsoft Edge, go to the Edge Settings pane, select the desired profile and click “Sign Out.”

Click ‘Sign Out’ to disconnect your Microsoft account from the profile.

Users can save their profile offline or sign in again with the same Microsoft account at a later time. If they choose to sign in with a different Microsoft account, they must decide whether to merge existing data or start fresh.
