Guide: How to make Cinemagraphs Easily with Cliplets
Creating your own cinemagraph is easier than you think!
Take a look at this unique skateboard wheel we crafted in just five minutes! It may not be the most thrilling image, but it certainly has an eye-catching aesthetic.
Creating your own cinemagraph is now easier than ever with Cliplets, a simple program that guides you through the steps.
How Cliplets Work
Cliplets create a looping effect by freezing the background while only playing a chosen part of the video.
The green area in the image is looping, while the background remains paused.
To start
Download Cliplet to get started. It’s available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, but only works with Windows 7. Click here for the 32-bit version and here for the 64-bit version.
Cliplets is a software program that allows users to create short videos with just a few clicks. It features an easy-to-use interface, which includes numbered options for creating and editing videos.
Making the Cinemagraph
Create a cinemagraph by first recording a steady, smooth video clip. Then, drag the clip into the project viewing area.
Hit the play button and you’ll find your video stabilized with minimal shaking. No need to worry about edges moving, as this is a result of stabilization.
1. Select the still background frame
To pause your background, slide the top square along the timeline.
Choose a background where the object you want to animate is stationary. The example shown here features a wheel that has been turned and is now stable in the center of the screen.
2. Select the ‘Animated’ timeline
To create a loop animation, click “Add a new layer” on the layers panel to the right. This will create a new layer called ’loop’. Then, select a small part of the clip and move the orange area on the timeline to indicate where it starts and ends.
To create a seamless animation, adjust the length of the loop to ensure smooth playback.
3. Outline the ‘animated’ area
Draw an outline around the area you wish to animate.
The cursor now resembles a pen, highlighted in green, allowing users to draw an outline of the area they wish to animate - such as the spinning wheel below.
Hit the play button at the bottom to test the effect. If it’s not up to your standards, try adjusting step 2 by adding or removing frames from the ‘animated’ selection.
Enabling ‘Smooth’ under the Play button on the project timeline can make transitions smoother.
4. Export your Cinemagraph
Click the ‘Export Cliplet’ button to save your cinemagraph in one of three file formats: .gif, .mp4, or .wmv. Our example is a .gif.
