How to Add and Remove a New User Account in Windows 10 PC – Guide

Want to remove a user account from your Windows 10 or 11 computer? This guide will show you how, whether it’s a Microsoft account or local one.

Windows 10 changes how user accounts work

Microsoft has released an updated version of Windows, featuring the removal of guest accounts, a requirement for most accounts to be linked to a Microsoft online account, and new permissions for individual accounts.

Context up a basic account

Creating a new user account on an activated PC is easy. Here’s how to do it.

To add a new user to your PC, go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Family & Others. Here, you can create a family member account or an account for someone else. If you’re sharing your PC with a roommate, make sure to list their account in the “other people” section.

Add a family member by selecting “Your family” from the subheading menu.

Adult or child user

A pop-up window prompts users to choose between adding a child or adult account. Microsoft accounts for children come with extra privileges and restrictions, such as app usage and time limits, while adults can monitor their activity on the Microsoft website. If this level of control is too much, users should opt for a local account instead.

Adult accounts are regular private user accounts, linked to a Microsoft account. They have full access to applications on a desktop PC, but don’t have administrator privileges. However, they can manage child accounts and these privileges can be added later.

Closing the account

To set up a Microsoft account for a child or adult, users must enter an existing Hotmail or Outlook.com address. If the person doesn’t have one, Windows provides a link to create one.

Click Next after entering your email address, then double-check it on the following page and hit Confirm.

Invitation sent

Creating an account for adults requires confirmation from their “family” - after clicking Confirm, they will receive an email prompting them to do so.

Invited users can oversee kids’ accounts and monitor their online activity with access to reports.

Inviting Others

Can you add someone outside the family to your addicted family member’s account? It may be a roommate, a friend who has been with you for a short period of time, or even an uncle who doesn’t need to view activity reports.

To begin anew, head to Start > Settings > Accounts > Family & Others and click “Add another person to this PC” under the “Other people” subheading.

Same process, different popUp

A new window pops up, no longer requiring you to distinguish between a child or adult user. Simply enter the email address of the new user and click Next.

A user’s new account is ready to go, but they must be connected to the internet the first time they log into their PC.

Assigned Access

Adding non-family members to your PC? Restrict their access with assigned access, which limits them to a single app when signed in and restricts the selection of apps available.

Users can assign access to their accounts by clicking “Define Access” at the bottom of the account management screen, which can be found under Start > Settings > Accounts > Family & Others.

Choose account and app

Users can restrict an account and assign an app to it by navigating to the Settings application. Click Choose an account, then Choose an app, and when finished, return to the previous screen or close the Settings application.

Why assigned access?

This feature allows users to restrict access to a single application, such as email or music player Groove, on public computers. However, it is not suitable for personal use.

If you’re looking to make your home PC a public terminal, but don’t want to risk nosy guests accessing your personal files, creating an assigned access account with Groove Music is the perfect solution. This will give you free access to your Groove Music Pass subscription while also keeping unwanted visitors away from your private data.
