Mass Effect book series

Continuing the story of humanity’s fight for survival, Mass Effect novels take readers on a sci-fi journey through outer space. Following Commander David Anderson and scientist Kahlee Sanders, the series picks up where the best-selling video games left off, from Revelation to Deception, culminating in an epic battle to save mankind.

Commander David Anderson, hero of the Alliance, has been sent to investigate a mysterious military research station at the edge of colonized space. This comes after humanity’s spread to the stars following the discovery of Prothean technology on Mars in 2148.

Dragon Age Book Series

The people of Thedas are wary of wizards, a fear highlighted by the attempted assassination of the Divine at the start of the book. This suspicion has led to their confinement in the White Spire, monitored by Templars. Despite this, they strive to make it clear that not all wizards become abominations.

The Fellowship embarks on a quest to discover if the Rite of Tranquility has been compromised. Along the way, they face darkspawn attacks, Golems guarding cities ravaged by battle, bandits, trips to the Fade to interact with Cole in his reality, a dragon, an elf named Pharamond and an invading army.

witches book series

Geralt de Rivia is a “witcher,” a warrior with magical powers born from an ancient ritual. He is tasked with protecting humans from monsters and magic rooted in Eastern European myth, all part of the collision between reality and fantasy that makes up the world of Witcher.

Blood of Elves is the first full-length novel in the Geralt of Rivia series, and while it may seem like a Game of Thrones-style epic, it’s actually a much more intimate story. It’s not about action or magic, but rather about the characters themselves. Geralt is a mercenary who prefers to stay out of other people’s business - he’s pragmatic and doesn’t get too involved.

Assassin’s Creed Book Series

Ezio Auditore’s lifelong battle against oppressive templars is the focus of “Revelations,” a novel based on the Ubisoft video game. But don’t be fooled by its cover - there’s nothing original here. Author Oliver Bowden simply copies and pastes cutscenes from the game, offering little new material as Ezio travels to Constantinople in the early 1500s.

Desiring to appreciate the book, I anticipated it would explore topics the game didn’t. However, author Bowden frequently emphasizes Ezio’s advancing age. Before most of his killings, Ezio ponders if he’ll survive. This concept intrigued me as it was something the game didn’t delve into deeply; while Ezio contemplates his age, in-game he remains youthful and resilient to sword strikes and high falls.

Metro 2033 book series

Twenty years after the human race was wiped out, a few thousand survivors remain in the Moscow subway. Cut off from the outside world, they have created their own society with its own rules and currency. The stations are city-states where ideologies clash and gun cartridges are used as money.

Artyom, a young man who has almost no memory of life on the surface, resides in VDNKh station, one of the northernmost stops in Moscow’s metro. Hunter, a mysterious figure, recognizes something special within Artyom and sends him on an epic quest through the metro’s various stations and populations to protect them from mutant threats lurking in the tunnels above.

Metro 2033 left me stunned. It’s an exceptional post-apocalyptic fantasy novel, one of the best I’ve ever encountered.

Dishonored Book Series

I was initially let down by Dishonored’s visuals, but the intriguing backstory kept me hooked. Adam Christopher’s novel expands on this alternate Europe, introducing new characters with strange supernatural powers.

The Whalers gang has returned with a new leader: the mysterious “eroded man,” a figure shrouded in an overcoat and bandages, whose power rivals that of their former leader Daud. His presence is both powerful and frightening.

Halo book series

Humanity’s fate in the Human Covenant War of Halo may depend on a single warrior: the last surviving SPARTAN from a legendary battle that brought humanity to Halo and ultimately led to its destruction. For the first time, this desperate, prisonerless struggle is revealed in full.

The last human stronghold against the Covenant’s onslaught is Reach, a planet located close to Earth. With fewer weapons and a smaller army, Reach’s soldiers are up against an impossible odds. But they have one advantage: they must keep the Covenant from discovering Earth’s location at all costs.

World of Warcraft Books

This novel will keep readers hooked with its gripping characters and intense conflicts. Christie Golden’s writing brings the story to life, creating an immersive experience that will leave readers on the edge of their seats.

Taran Zhu sought justice for the people of Azeroth, demanding Garrosh stand trial for his crimes. Despite the suffering inflicted by Garrosh, Taran Zhu insisted on a diplomatic, legal and fair process. The trial featured flashback sequences between Tyrande and Baine, with Baine bearing the brunt of defending Garrosh despite his own pain.

The History of the Future

In his new book, Peter Bowler, professor emeritus of the history of science at Queen’s University Belfast, argues that futurology has its own distinct history. He shows how predictions about the future have changed over time and been shaped by different people and forces.

In this book, Bowler examines the works of 20th century futurologists, from HG Wells to Yevgeny Zamyatin and lesser-known scientists like Dr. Serge Voronoff. He takes a critical look at their predictions for humanity’s future, exploring how technology was seen as the driving force behind social change.

Masters of Doom

“Masters of Doom” tells the story of two game industry legends, John Romero and John Carmack, from their childhoods to the founding of id Software and the release of iconic games such as Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. Author David Kushner combines nonfiction with narrative retelling to create a captivating account of this 7-year period in video game history.

David Kushner’s book blurs the line between fiction and nonfiction, offering a compelling narrative that reads like a gossip column one moment and a punk rock story the next. Drawing on hundreds of interviews conducted over six years, Kushner paints an intimate portrait of the video game industry.
