The Best Nintendo Switch Games For Free

Five years after its launch, the Nintendo Switch remains a popular console. Its $299.99 price tag includes the homeStyle special, which allows users to play their favorite titles on a big-screen TV when docked or in portable mode while on the go. For those looking for an even better experience, there’s the high-end variant, the $349.99 Nintendo Switch OLED with its attractive screen and enhanced support. Alternatively, there’s also the more affordable Nintendo Switch Lite at $199.99 for those who don’t need a TV connection.

The Nintendo Switch has seen one of the most impressive first-year libraries in gaming history, boasting acclaimed titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey - all considered some of the greatest games ever made.

Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2 is an action game that prioritizes skill, speed and spectacle over realism and story. Its combat draws from the likes of Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden, but its visuals are uniquely bizarre. It stands out as a brilliant example of its genre.

You’ll be thrown into the action right away with no delay - no need to wait for the good stuff. In just minutes, you’ll be soaring through space, slicing angels and battling giant monsters. It’s an intense start that few games can match.

bloodstained

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has successfully recaptured the classic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night experience, a feat that many other games in the “Metroidvania” subgenre have attempted but failed to achieve. This is especially impressive given that Nintendo and Konami, who created the original titles, have since moved away from this style of game.

Koji Iga, the mastermind behind the Castlevania series, has crafted a unique new world for his latest installment. With over 10 Castlevania games under his belt, Iga has gone beyond simply reviving Dracula and sending another Belmont into a castle. Instead, he’s created an entirely new universe with its own characters and risks that are tailored to support the game’s mechanics.

Bravely Default II

Bravely Default II, a work-centric RPG, has been released to combine classic gameplay with modern game design. The title offers a variety of job classes and an immersive fantasy world. Despite some issues similar to its predecessors, the game has seen improvements since the two 3DS titles.

The classic turn-based combat of the series shines with its Brave and Standard commands, allowing players to store up or trigger multiple actions in a single turn. Characters can act up to four times per turn, using physical abilities, spells, items and more. This allows for quick completion of normal enemy encounters and the ability to dive into or dodge combat as needed.

Hyrule’s Cadence

Cadence of Hyrule combines the rhythm-based gameplay of Necrodancer’s Crypt with the classic adventure elements of The Legend of Zelda, creating a unique mashup that takes players on an exciting journey through a procedurally generated world inspired by Hyrules’ past.

In Cadence of Hyrule, you must use your reflexes and memorization skills to battle enemies in a rhythmic dance. Every enemy has its own pattern that you must learn to avoid getting hit while intercepting them. This creates a fast-paced puzzle that requires quick thinking and reactions, just like an action game. However, the added element of music makes it a truly magical experience reminiscent of the Necrodancer’s Crypt.

Clubhouse Games

On June 5th, Nintendo’s Clubhouse Games will be released for $40. The collection includes 51 traditional games and toys, such as backgammon, checkers and Yahtzee. It also features lesser-known titles like takoyaki and minishogi. Each game has been polished to a shine by Nintendo, making it an appealing choice for gamers of all levels of experience.

Nintendo has breathed new life into generic board games and cards, transforming them with sound and visuals to make them attractive to play.

Donkey Kong Country

More than 100 kong deaths later, I can confidently say that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a challenging platform game. With stages designed to test your skills and push you to the brink of insanity, you’ll need to make precise jumps using trampolines, vines and other eccentric contraptions in order to progress. Despite the difficulty, it’s worth it - conquering this game will earn you serious platform feedback rights.

DK and his friends have never looked better in Tropical Freeze, with their furry skin looking great on TV or the GamePad. The game offers 13 hours of lush forests and exotic islands to explore, while character models boast intricate details such as Cranky Kong’s wrinkles and perfect teeth.

Game Builder Garage

Nintendo’s Game Builder Garage is more than just a game - it’s an opportunity to explore the creative process behind game development. By allowing players to get a glimpse of the inner workings of game creation, Nintendo has opened up a new way for people to appreciate and understand the artistry that goes into making video games.

Previous console generations saw game designers using scripting languages like Lua to define what a game did, rather than what characters said. These scripts would be used to control elements such as enemy numbers, aggression levels and weapon types in first-person shooters.

Hades

After four years in Early Access, Supergiant Games’ Hades has finally been released in its full form. The game is the latest effort from the studio behind Bastion, Transistor and Pyre, and it’s clear that they’ve reached a new high point with this title.

Hades is a triumph. Its opulent visuals, deadly chambers, fierce enemies and tight combat make it an unforgettable experience.

Indivisible

Lab Zero Games has achieved the seemingly impossible with Indivisible: a 2D action RPG that combines thrilling combat, an engaging story, and platforming elements. Having already proven their mettle in the fighting game genre with 2012’s Skullgirls, Lab Zero Games has now ventured into the world of RPGs - and they’ve done it with style. Indivisible is one of the most imaginative RPGs I’ve played this year.

Years ago, a group of heroes thwarted an apocalyptic threat when they banished Kala, a fearsome deity. Now, Indivisible takes place in a world where myth and spirituality are as real as the ground beneath its people’s feet.

Knockout City

Knockout City reignited my appreciation for the classic playground game of dodgeball – a thrilling Old West-style showdown. Players must stay alert and ready to catch whatever their opponents throw at them.

Knockout City is an exciting game that captures the feeling of playing dodgeball in grade school. Its unique mechanics make it stand out from other shooter games, allowing players to experience the thrill of dodging and throwing balls without the fear of being shot or blown up.
