The last of us

The Last of Us Remastered offers a major upgrade in frame rate, with the PlayStation 4 version running at 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution - a significant improvement over the original’s 30 frames per second at 720p resolution on the PlayStation 3.

At first, the transition from 30 to 60 frames per second in the remastered version of Naughty Dog’s classic game may seem shocking. But after playing it, many players have come to appreciate the difference. Those who don’t agree can lock the frame rate back to 30, but it’s the back-and-forth that really highlights how much smoother and more vibrant 60 fps looks compared to its PS3 predecessor.

Metro Redux

Metro Redux is the ultimate package for gamers, offering the definitive versions of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. Both games have been rebuilt using the latest 4A Engine, allowing console owners to experience smooth 60FPS gameplay and cutting-edge visuals that were previously only available on high-end PCs.

Newcomers to the Metro series will be able to experience two of the best story-based shooters ever in one package. This epic adventure combines survival horror, exploration, tactical combat and stealth. Fans of the original games will find a transformed world with improved lighting effects, physics, dynamic weather and new features.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

The Ultimate Edition of Tomb Raider offers an enhanced version of the 2013 hit game, featuring improved visuals and extra content. Players can now access all the downloadable content from the original release directly on disk, as well as new multiplayer maps, weapons from Hitman: Absolution and additional characters.

Tomb Raider fans who have already played the game on an older console may not find much incentive to jump back in. However, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions offer voice commands, allowing players to quickly access maps or weapons by simply saying “map” or “pistol”. While this isn’t a groundbreaking feature, it does work as intended.

God of War Collection Vita

God of War Collection for the Vita fails to do justice to Kratos’ epic adventures, with cluttered graphics, flawed audio and choppy gameplay. Fans of the series will be disappointed by this less-than-stellar version of the 2009 PS3 HD remaster.

God of War Collection on Vita fails to impress visually. Environments appear less detailed and dull, while character models and objects appear out of focus. There is also no way to adjust the screen size, resulting in a stretched out image that detracts from the experience.

Grand Theft Auto V

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 offers a unique gaming experience, one of astonishment rather than despair. The game’s virtual Los Angeles is an extraordinary environment, with every detail - from the bags of garbage in alleyways - painstakingly rendered.

Rockstar’s latest installment in the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA V, is both beautiful and nihilistic. Players take on the role of three anti-heroes as they navigate a world of crime and corruption. Despite their questionable actions, these characters have an undeniable charm that makes them endearing to players.

The whimsical world of Link’s Awakening belies a deeper theme of melancholy, as the game follows Link on his journey through a place on the brink of doom or recovering from it. With its vibrant characters and settings, the game offers an exploration of sadness and hope.

Link’s Awakening, a classic Zelda game, has been remade for the Nintendo Switch. Despite the advancements in gaming since its original release, this remake remains true to the original.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty has long been a leader in the FPS genre, setting the bar for action-packed, cinematic gaming experiences. Infinity Ward’s move away from WWII with Modern Warfare marked a major shift in the franchise, creating a new division within the Call of Duty world.

Modern Warfare 2 stands out from the series with its three-pronged approach: a single-player campaign, Spec Ops mode for local and online co-op play, and an improved multiplayer experience.

Resident Evil 2

The Resident Evil 2 remake has breathed new life into zombies, making them a thrilling and terrifying presence once more. These undead creatures are depicted as gruesome, relentless monsters that burst through doors, crawl out of windows and lurk in the shadows, ready to feast on their prey.

They come for you, relentless and unstoppable, even with a gunshot wound to the leg. Their pale hands reach out as they crawl across the floor, their glassy white eyes shining in the flashlight beam. They scream and march forward, arms outstretched and jaws dripping with blood. Nothing can stop them from coming for you.

The Nathan Drake Collection

The Uncharted series is a beloved action-adventure franchise, and the Nathan Drake Collection offers the best way to experience it. These remasters showcase the stunning art direction of the originals, while also providing smoother gameplay with an updated 60 frames per second.

Eight years after its initial release, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune has been remastered by Bluepoint Games. The updated visuals still have the same “wow” factor, and the doubled frame rate makes it feel more responsive than its original PlayStation 3 version.

Shadow of the Colossus

A young man embarks on a quest to save a dead maiden from her cursed fate, journeying to a forbidden land. There, in an old castle, he meets a mysterious being with the power to bring her back to life. This timeless tale of courage and hope remains unchanged.

2018’s Shadow of the Colossus remake highlights what its creators consider essential to a video game: not graphics, but the core gameplay. Visuals can be heavily modified or completely reimagined without compromising the experience.
