Guide: Fix ‘Windows 10 Battery Time Remaining’ Issue

By hovering your mouse over the battery icon in the taskbar menu of any Windows laptop or tablet, you should be able to see an estimate of how much battery life is left. If this isn’t appearing, we’ll show you two ways to fix it.

The Windows 10 Creators Update had a bug that caused the battery estimate indicator to be hidden. This feature, which is enabled by default on Windows devices, can be affected by buggy or beta OS builds and incomplete updates.

Users of Windows laptops may have experienced issues with their battery remaining / estimate. Fortunately, there are solutions to this problem that can help restore the laptop’s battery life estimation. Whether it’s a software update or a hardware reset, these steps can help users get back to enjoying their laptop without worrying about how much time they have left before needing to recharge.

Update Windows 10

Updating your laptop’s Windows 10 OS can help fix the issue of inaccurate battery life estimates.

Press the Windows key and I together to open the Windows settings menu.

Choose ‘Updates & security’ from the settings menu.

Install any available updates by tapping the Download button in the Windows Update section of the page.

Ensure your computer is linked to the web for optimal performance.

After installing the latest update, laptop users can now view an estimate of their battery life by hovering or clicking on the battery icon in the taskbar. Additionally, it is recommended to open Device Manager and update drivers for major components such as processor, chipset and graphics card.

If the first solution fails to restore your PC’s battery life estimate, a more technical and time-consuming approach may be necessary.

Customize the Windows registry

If you’re having trouble gauging your laptop’s battery life, the Registry Editor can help. Two entries - UserBatteryDischargeEstimator and EnergyEstimationDisabled - need to be adjusted in the Windows registry to get an accurate estimate.

Deleting two entries in your laptop’s settings can give you an accurate estimate of battery life. It’s a simple hack - just follow the instructions and you’ll be able to see how much time your laptop has left.

To access the Windows Registry Editor, users can type “regedit” into the Windows search box.

Launch the Windows Registry Editor by tapping Enter on your keyboard while running as an administrator.

Navigate to the Registry Editor and open the folder “ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPower” to complete the next step. Here’s how.

Tap the drop-down arrow next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to expand the folder.

Open the SYSTEM folder to access its contents.

Open the CurrentControlSet folder to continue.

Open the Control folder to reveal its contents.

Scroll down and tap the Power folder to finish.

Delete the UserBatteryDischargeEstimator entry to complete the process.

Users are warned that deleting an entry in the system registry could cause instability. They must confirm this by tapping “Yes” to proceed.

Delete the EnergyEstimationDisabled entry to complete the process.

Tap ‘Yes’ to delete the item.

Create a new item, EnergyEstimationEnabled, in the Power folder to display battery estimate on Windows computers. Follow the steps below.

In the Registry Editor, users can right-click on the Power folder in the left pane to access additional options.

Right-click and select “New” from the menu, then choose “DWORD (32-bit) value” to complete Step 11.

Rename the item to “EnergyEstimationEnabled” and press Enter.

Right-click the EnergyEstimationEnabled entry and select Change to make the necessary adjustments.

Set the item’s value to 1 and confirm.

Reboot your computer to see an estimate of how long your battery will last based on its current level.

Get the correct estimate

Having an accurate estimate of your laptop battery life is key to making the most of it, especially when you don’t have access to a charger. To ensure you know how much power you have left, update your computer’s operating system or use the Registry Editor to check.
