Guide: Best Screen Sharing Software For Mac and Windows
People are quickly adapting to the new reality of working from home, with group video calling and chat software such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack and Skype in high demand. Screen sharing software is proving particularly popular due to its ability to facilitate discussion on topics and explain features more effectively, saving time for administrators.
Working from home can make it difficult to access the guidance and advice of senior colleagues. To ensure workflow is not disrupted, employees can use screen sharing software on PC or Mac to connect with seniors and get the help they need.
This post looks at five of the best screen sharing tools for PC and Mac. It covers apps that offer screen sharing as part of a suite of features, such as chat, group video calls and screen recording, as well as software solutions specifically designed for the purpose.
Software with screen sharing add-on
1. Zoom
Zoom’s popularity skyrocketed during the pandemic, and its features make it an ideal platform for digital conferences. Screen sharing is one of the most useful tools Zoom offers, allowing users to easily share their screens with others.
You can share your screen with participants during the call by using the screen sharing option at the bottom or pressing Shift + Command + S (Mac) or Ctrl + Shift + S (Windows).
Screen sharing is made easy with three distinct menus: Basic, Advanced and Files. Basic allows users to share their current screen or minimized apps, as well as use the whiteboard function. Advanced provides flexibility to share any portion of the screen. And Files integrates with cloud storage services like OneDrive, Google Drive and Box, so users can access and share files with attendees.
Zoom’s screen sharing feature offers a range of tools, including mouse, select, text, draw, stamp and eraser. This makes the experience more interactive and allows users to easily stop sharing at any time.
2. Skype
Skype is the go-to screen sharing solution, offering a range of features for free. With its reliable performance and availability on any platform, users can take advantage of group calls, background blur, live translation, polls and more. Plus, Skype allows users to share their screens during video calls.
Tap the Share screen option during video calls to quickly and easily share your current screen or application window. Select the desired option and tap start sharing.
Skype lets you share your screen with another person, indicated by a red border around the screen. To stop sharing or switch between screens/windows, go to the lower right corner. You can also record your screen sharing session.
Skype’s screen sharing lacks OneDrive integration and annotation features, unlike Zoom.
3. Microsoft Teams
Microsoft is aiming to revolutionize the way organizations communicate with its all-in-one product, Microsoft Teams. The platform offers group video calling and screen sharing capabilities, making it a viable alternative to Zoom, Slack and Skype for Business.
Microsoft Teams offers two ways to share your screen: from an individual chat, tap the Screen Sharing option in the top right corner to select which screen you’d like to share.
Microsoft Teams now offers more screen sharing options than ever before when you begin a meeting from the channel. You can choose to share your current screens, open a PowerPoint slide for attendees, add files from OneDrive or PC, or use the Microsoft Whiteboard from the settings.
Microsoft Teams’ screen sharing feature allows users to easily manage settings and stop sharing with participants from the bottom right corner. Unlike Skype, I have not experienced any lag while using this feature.
Special screen sharing tools
1. Screenleap
Screenleap is a screen sharing solution that makes it easy to share your screen with others. It requires no download, works on any device with an internet connection, and offers flexible pricing options.
Create an account with Screenleap and get a custom web URL for your meeting. The free plan is limited to 40 minutes per day.
Tap the Meet Now option to quickly create a room for screen sharing. You’ll be able to view the split screen on the left and your meeting ID with number of viewers on the right.
The screen-sharing software offers a range of features, including the ability to switch screens, open webcams and pause sharing. Notably, it also includes a chat function that allows users to share comments and suggestions in real time.
2. TeamViewer
TeamViewer is a top-rated software for screen sharing and remote access, enabling users to securely connect to their systems using an ID and password.
Download TeamViewer, available for Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux and Raspberry Pi. Open the app and select the Meeting tab.
Navigate to Host Meeting> Presentation to access a floating side menu with options such as meeting ID, lock, and user addition. This menu allows users to control the sharing screen.
TeamViewer’s Whiteboard function allows users to discuss topics in detail, using pen, pencil and brush tools. This feature can be especially useful for teaching code logic or troubleshooting bugs. I personally use it frequently to help junior developers learn. Additionally, video mode enables users to utilize their PC or Mac webcam for further explanation.
Share Screen in style
Screen sharing is a great way to collaborate and get work done remotely. It makes working from home easier, and with the right tools, you can even use a Whiteboard feature to discuss topics in detail. Have you tried screen sharing with these apps? Let us know in the comments!
