Guide: Fix ‘iTunes Windows Store App Driver Not Installed’ Issue
Apple’s release of iTunes as a Windows Store app was met with approval. The look and feel of the Store version is the same as the traditional app, but it runs faster and has less bloat. Despite this, there are still some issues.
I encountered an issue when attempting to connect my PC to my iPad after reinstalling iTunes from the Windows Store: I received a ‘Driver Not Installed’ error.
Do you have an error that won’t go away? Let’s explore how to fix it.
Reminder: Before attempting any of the proposed fixes, make sure to disconnect your iPhone or iPad from your computer.
Check for new Windows updates
To fix the ‘Driver Not Installed’ error, iTunes suggests installing the latest Windows 10 updates. Though this didn’t work for me as my PC was already up to date, it is important to try this first.
Windows updates can consume large amounts of time and bandwidth, making them a potential drain on resources.
Search for Windows Update in the Start menu to open it.
Click “Check for updates” and any new updates will begin installing automatically.
If Windows Update isn’t working, our troubleshooting guide can help.
After updating Windows, check if iTunes now recognizes your iPhone or iPad. If the ‘Driver not installed’ error message persists, or if there are no new updates available for your PC, further steps may be necessary.
Update and reinstall drivers
Outdated USB drivers associated with iPhones and iPads can cause the error “Driver not installed”. Updating Windows may not help, so users must update the drivers themselves. This is easily done by visiting Device Manager. I found this to be successful, and hopefully it will work for you too.
Unlock your iPhone or iPad, and connect it to your PC. If iTunes launches, exit the program.
To access Device Manager, right-click the Start button and select it from the context menu.
Right-click your iPhone or iPad in the Portable Devices section of Device Manager and select Update Driver to ensure it is up-to-date.
Select “Search automatically for updated driver software” in Device Manager to download and install a newer version of the driver.
Right-click the “Apple Mobile Device USB device” in the Universal Serial Bus Devices section, then select “Update Driver.” When prompted, choose to “Search automatically for updated driver software.”
Apple’s USB devices are now available on select PCs.
If the Apple Mobile Device Composite USB device is not listed in Device Manager on some PCs, users should not be concerned. Updating the driver is still necessary.
Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer, open Device Manager, and then launch iTunes. You should find your device ready to use.
The future remains uncertain, but what comes next is yet to be seen.
Update iTunes manually
If you’re using Windows 10, automatic updates for Windows Store apps are enabled by default. However, if not, you’ll need to manually update iTunes. Doing so should resolve any issues with the troublesome iTunes driver.
Step 2: Access the Windows Store and select the three-dot icon in the top right corner. From there, select “Downloads and updates.”
If new updates are available for iTunes, click the Download button to apply them.
Automatic updates enabled? No need to hit ‘Get Updates’ button.
Despite initial attempts, the goal remains unfulfilled. Further action will be taken to reach it.
Reset location and privacy settings
Resetting iTunes trust rights can help resolve the ‘Driver not installed’ error on iPhones and iPads. To do this, users should step away from their PCs and follow a few simple steps.
Resetting trust rights on your iOS device will prompt it to forget all previously connected devices, so you should re-trust any PCs or Macs you have already authorized.
To reset an iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, tap General, then select Reset.
To reset your device’s location and privacy settings, enter your password when prompted.
Confirm the reset by tapping the reset button.
Connect your iPhone or iPad to your PC and tap “Trust” in the pop-up notification to complete the process.
The issue of iOS devices not appearing in iTunes has been resolved: problematic permission settings were the cause, and the fix is now in place.
Reinstall iTunes
If all other solutions have failed, reinstalling iTunes is the only way to fix the issue. This is likely due to corrupted application files, and so a full reinstallation of the program is necessary.
Uninstalling iTunes will not affect any iPhone or iPad backups or music library, which can still be accessed after reinstalling the program.
Right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Apps & Features from the context menu will give you access to a list of installed programs.
Delete iTunes from your PC by clicking it on the list of apps and selecting ‘Delete’.
Reboot your computer to complete the installation process.
To get iTunes, open the Windows Store and search for it, then click Install.
Reinstalling iTunes and signing in with your Apple ID should allow for a smooth connection between your iPhone or iPad and the program.
Let the music play
Updating Windows or using Device Manager to manually update outdated drivers can help fix the ‘Driver Not Installed’ error. If that doesn’t work, there are other solutions available to get your device running again - a relief compared to the issues associated with desktop iTunes.
