Customizing Lock Screen on macOS: Guide – Guide

Customizing your Mac can be a fun way to make it feel like your own. Change the desktop background, user icons, and lock screen background so that when you log in, you know it’s yours. This is especially helpful if multiple people use the same type of Mac in a shared space.

Change the desktop wallpaper

A crisp, clear desktop can be achieved with a large wallpaper. For MacBook Air, opt for a wallpaper with Full HD resolution; for MacBook and MacBook Pro, choose one with 4K resolution.

For those looking to connect their MacBook, MacBook Air or Pro to a 4K TV or monitor, 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) is the recommended resolution. For 5K iMacs, a 5K wallpaper is necessary.

To customize your desktop, right-click and select “Change desktop background” from the menu.

Go to the wallpaper section or pick an album folder to use as your background.

Confirm your new wallpaper is visible on the lock screen by clicking the  Apple menu and selecting Lock Screen, or pressing Control + Command + Q.

I opted for an official Firewatch wallpaper as my desktop background and lock screen.

Change the user account image

Apple offers 43 images to choose from as your account photo, visible on the lock and login screens. You can also create a custom image for yourself or anything else. Learn how to change your account image here.

Users must add an image to the Photos app in order to set it as their user account picture.

Replacing a user’s account image can be done more effectively by using a square image with a resolution of 700 x 700 pixels.

Users can transfer their images to the Photos app by following a few simple steps.

To access System Preferences, click the Apple menu.

Navigate to the Users and Groups section of your computer’s settings.

To change your profile picture, click on the current user’s account image to open a menu of photo options.

Choose the photo you want to use by scrolling through the left panel of thumbnails until you reach the new images at the bottom, then click ’next'.

You can snap a selfie and use it as your profile picture.

Align the image using the zoom slider, then click Save to confirm.

You can now use a shortcut to quickly view the lock screen and check your new user account’s image.

Add a message or text on the lock screen

Leaving a personalized message on the lock screen of your MacBook can help you get it back if you ever forget it at an airport, cafe or conference. That way, anyone who finds it can easily reach out to you and return your laptop.

Create a personalized message for your brother or co-worker with sass. Here’s how:

Access Security and Privacy settings through the Apple menu in System Preferences.

Unlock the setting by clicking the lock icon in the lower right corner of the window and entering your administrator password.

Click the “Set lock message” button after selecting the option to display a message when your screen is locked.

Click the lock icon to secure the text.

Users can quickly view custom text on their lock screen by pressing Control + Command + Q.

Password protect after the screensaver starts

To protect your Mac from unauthorized access, set a password requirement when entering hibernate mode or after the screen saver starts. Without this precaution, anyone can gain access to your system.

Head to the Apple Menu and open System Preferences to get started.

To ensure your device’s security, go to the Security and Privacy settings and select the “Request password” option. You can then choose how often you’d like to be prompted for a password.

Apple has released a new feature that allows Mac users to lock their computers when they step away, preventing unauthorized access.
