How to Enable Windows Snap on Mac – Guide

Mac users can now take advantage of the “window dock” feature, which allows them to easily attach windows to certain parts of the screen or against each other. This is a great way to quickly and accurately align windows, similar to Microsoft Windows’ window snap feature. To use this new macOS feature, you must have a modern version of the Mac OS system software (introduced in Sierra).

Mac users running macOS 10.12 or later have access to a feature without needing third-party applications or utilities. For those on earlier versions, third-party utilities can provide similar functionality.

Mac split view

OS X El Capitan introduces Split View, a feature that allows users to view two applications side-by-side, similar to Windows’ Snap. However, not all applications are compatible with the feature.

Press and hold the green button in the upper left corner of each window to access split view, which will automatically resize the current application window to take up the left part of the screen.

Users can now take advantage of Split View on their Macs, allowing them to open two windows side-by-side and work with both simultaneously. A list of compatible windows will appear on the right, enabling users to select one to fill the other side.

Apps may not be compatible with split view, as some require more than half the screen. If this is the case, open windows will appear as thumbnails at the bottom of the display with a message indicating that they are “Not available in this split view”.

With a single click, you can fill your screen with two applications side-by-side. Easily adjust the size of each window by dragging the slider in the middle.

Split view can be enabled quickly and easily by using four fingers to slide up on the touchpad, opening Mission Control. To merge two windows, simply drag one onto the Spaces toolbar and then drag the other over it.

More advanced window management with magnet

Try Magnet to manage windows on a Mac - now on sale for just $0.99 on the Mac App Store. It offers all the features of Windows Snap, plus extra capabilities.

Magnet offers a range of window resizing options, allowing users to customize their workspace. Beyond the traditional Split View, which fills half the screen with two windows, Magnet enables users to arrange four windows in each corner of the screen, three windows with one on top and two on bottom, or one window on the left and two on the right. The possibilities are virtually endless.

To get the most out of Magnet, make sure to grant permissions in System Preferences. Then, you can either drag windows to the desired corner or side, or use the menu bar icon for shortcuts like centering a window. The icon provides easy access to all scaling options.
