Guide: How to Search and Fix Random Sounds in Windows 10 PC
Recent reports of random beeping noises coming from Windows 10 laptops have been causing concern. This unexpected sound can be disruptive and difficult to trace, but this post explains the cause and how to fix it.
I was curious about what was causing the strange beeping coming from my PC, so I wrote this post to help others figure out which program is making the noise.
Investigate how to identify the source of random sound on Windows 10 PCs.
1. Restart the computer
If a bug in a third-party program is causing an issue, restarting the device may resolve it.
2. Check the Volume Mixer
Windows 10’s volume mixer can help you identify the program responsible for random noises, allowing you to mute it.
Right-clicking the volume icon in the taskbar and selecting “Open Volume Mixer” is an easy way to adjust sound levels.
Stay tuned to identify the app making noise: in this case, it was Lightkey, a Windows text prediction tool. Activating Sound Support for the app made its presence visible in the volume mixer, indicated by a green sound bar.
Users have reported random sound coming from their computers, and suggest that apps like Discord and Windows Defender may be to blame. To troubleshoot, check the settings of these programs.
3. Monitor sound
If the above method didn’t help, you can use Process Monitor to identify the program causing sound. To do this, configure the tool to monitor applications that produce sound. Here’s how:
Download Process Monitor to monitor your system’s processes: a free tool from Microsoft.
Open the Procmon file by extracting it and clicking on it.
If the Process Monitor Filter window does not open automatically, click ‘Filter’ at the top of the screen to open it.
To add .wav files to the list of available notification sounds, select Path from the first drop-down list, choose Contains in the following, type .wav in the text box and click Apply.
Check the “Capture Events” box in the File menu.
Allow the Process Monitor tool to run in the background and wait for a notification sound. Once heard, check under Process name and path to identify the app responsible.
4. Run the audio troubleshooter
To diagnose any sound driver issues, run the native audio troubleshooter. Follow these steps:
To update your PC, open Settings and navigate to Update and Security.
The Windows Key + I shortcut provides quick access to Settings from any screen.
To troubleshoot audio issues, click Troubleshoot in the left sidebar of the window, then select Run the troubleshooter from the Play audio option on the right.
Complete the process by following the on-screen instructions.
5. Attach the mouse
Windows 10 users have reported that a malfunctioning mouse can cause sound to randomly connect and disconnect. To fix the issue, unplug the mouse for a while or try changing the USB port.
You can mute the sound of any device connecting or disconnecting from your PC, so you don’t have to replace your mouse just yet.
- Identify the main point of the original sentence.
- Rewrite it in a concise and clear manner, using language that is appropriate for a journalist’s writing style. The original sentence: “It is important to take the necessary steps to ensure that your business is successful.” Revised: Taking proactive measures is essential for achieving success in business.
To access the Control Panel on a PC, select Small icons in the view option.
Select the ‘Sound’ option to continue.
Click the Sounds tab, select “Device Connect” and “Device Disconnect” under Program Events, and set the sound to None. Tap Ok to save.
If you’re having trouble connecting or disconnecting an external device, try testing other sounds in the window. If you find a suitable sound, turn it off.
6. Reinstall Sound Driver
Updating or reinstalling the sound driver can fix malfunctioning issues, and we have outlined the steps to do so.
Could it be a hardware problem?
If the sound is coming from inside your computer, it may be a hardware issue. To address this, file a complaint with the appropriate brand customer service if you have a warranty or visit a local computer repair shop.
Updating Windows 10 is essential for optimal performance. Learn how to do it quickly and offline with this guide.
