Guide: How to Enable File Extensions in OneDrive for PC and Mobile

File extensions are essential for identifying file types, especially on OneDrive, where files from various programs and devices may be stored. Unfortunately, these extensions are not visible on the desktop or in mobile apps by default, leaving users with generic icons that can be misleading and difficult to interpret.

It’s simple to show file extensions on OneDrive for desktop and Android. Though it may take a bit more effort, iOS users can also view them. Here’s how.

On the desktop

OneDrive does not have a feature to show file extensions on the desktop, but Windows’ File Explorer can be used to do so. This will cause all files in other folders to display their extensions too, so it’s something to consider.

Open File Explorer and select ‘Change folder and search options’ from the File menu.

Clear the check box next to “Hide extensions for known file types” in the Advanced settings section of the View tab in Folder Options to save changes.

Users can access all file extensions in the OneDrive folder, regardless of their display mode.

To conceal file extensions, go to the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box and select the “Hide extensions for known file types” option.

If you need to check the file extension of multiple files, manually right-clicking and selecting Properties from the context menu can be tedious. An easier option is to simply view the file extension next to File Type in the General tab.

To determine a file extension, move the mouse pointer over the file. If the extension appears in the tooltip, you’re done. Otherwise, open the file’s properties dialog to find out.

On Android

Microsoft’s OneDrive for Android offers users the ability to list file extensions, but they must first enable the feature in the Settings panel.

Open the OneDrive app, select the Me icon at the bottom of the screen, and access Settings.

Enable the toggle to show file extensions, then return.

All files should be visible immediately. If not, force quit and restart the app to resolve the issue.

To conceal file extensions, navigate to the OneDrive settings page and disable the switch beside “Show file extensions.”

Tap the Ellipsis (three dots) icon next to a file to view its extension without enabling the Show file extensions option. Selecting the inverted exclamation mark icon on the menu that appears will display the extension next to Type.

Taking the time to complete a task can be tedious, but it can be beneficial in certain situations.

On iOS

OneDrive on iOS is a great tool, but it lacks the ability to show standard file extensions like its Android version. To view them, users must manually search for the extension, though it’s not as difficult as it sounds.

Tap the Ellipsis icon next to any file and you’ll be able to view its extension and name.

Additionally, tapping Details in the same menu reveals extra information about the file, such as its modified date, size and location.

Tap and hold a file to access the Info menu in the Files app, allowing you to work with OneDrive.

The Info popup box should display the file name and its extension.

What about the web app?

You can now easily identify the type of file you’re accessing on OneDrive, regardless of whether you’re using a desktop, Android or iOS device.

OneDrive web app users don’t need to worry about file extensions, as they are enabled by default.
